  • Lowest population growth during the 2000s

    Sweden’s population increased by 1 600 inhabitants in the first half of 2024. This is the smallest population increase measured during the first six months of the year in the 2000s. On 30 June 2024, 10 553 300 people were registered in Sweden.

  • More in-migrations than out-migrations in 8 out of 21 counties

    In 2023, the number of domestic moves across county borders was 234 200, which is a decrease of four percent compared to 2022. In total, 8 out of 21 counties had a positive domestic net migration in 2023, that is, more people moved in than out.

  • Lowest population growth in 22 years

    Sweden’s population was 10 551 700 inhabitants at the end of 2023. The population increased by 30 200 people in 2023, which was the lowest population increase in absolute terms since 2001. A decrease in the number of births, a lower number of immigrations as well as a higher number of emigrations are the reasons for the lower population increase during 2023 compared to previous years.

  • Lowest population increase in 17 years

    On June 30th, 2023, the population of Sweden was 10 545 300 people. That was 23 000 more people than at the end of 2022. Population growth during the first half of the year was 11 800 people lower compared to the same period in 2022, and the lowest since 2005.

  • Single-person households without children the most common

    The number of households in Sweden at the end of 2022 was 4 883 800. In 2022, the number of households increased by 52 000, or 1.1 percent. The relative increase in households was greater than Sweden's population growth, which means that the average household size decreased somewhat from 2.16 persons in 2021 to 2.15 persons in 2022.
