  • Greenhouse gas emissions from the Swedish economy decreased by 3 percent in 2022

    Greenhouse gas emissions from Sweden’s economy decreased by 3 percent in 2022 to 49 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents compared with 2021. The transport sector is the only economic sector that went against this trend and increased its emissions. Over the same period GDP increased by 2,5 percent. Therefore, the emission intensity is decreased by 5 percent during the year 2022.

  • Reduced extraction of natural resources in 2022

    After several years of a rising trend, domestic material consumption fell in 2022. In 2022, 262 million tonnes of natural resources were extracted in Sweden, which is a reduction of 2 percent since 2021. Domestic material consumption amounted to 24.5 tonnes per person in 2022 which is a reduction of 1 percent since 2021.

  • Regional greenhouse gas emissions are increasing

    Greenhouse gas emissions at the regional level in Sweden increase in 2021 compared to 2020. The increase in emissions comes mainly from the production of goods, the service sector and from the use of petrol and diesel in households. With the exception of Halland and Gävleborg regions, the increases in emissions are visible all over the country.

  • Production in the environmental sector increases in 2021

    The environmental goods and services sector accounts for 4,1 percent of Sweden’s total GDP. The production of environmental goods and services increased by 12 percent from the previous year. However, 2020 was affected by the pandemic which implied an overall reduction in production level. The environmental sector employs 163 000 people, of which about 80 percent are men.
