Production of cereals, dried pulses and oilseeds in 2017:

Large unharvested areas in northern Sweden due to rain

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden and Swedish Board of Agriculture 2017-12-14 9.30

Autumn rains often made it difficult to harvest field crops in many regions in the country. In the counties of Västerbotten and Norrbotten, half of the grain area was left unharvested. In the counties of Gävleborg and Västernorrland, one fifth of the grain area was left unharvested.

Large areas have been left unharvested also in the counties of Jämtland, Kronoberg, Kalmar, Blekinge, Jönköping and Värmland. However, the areas that could be harvested have in many cases yielded very good harvests. The total grain harvest is estimated at 5.95 million tonnes. That is 9 percent more than last year and 8 percent more than the average for the last five years. The increase is mainly a result of a larger crop area of high yielding winter wheat.

Crop yields of spring barley differed a lot depending on harvest conditions

As regards the yield outcome for spring barley, the effects of hard harvest conditions are noted especially in northern Sweden. In Norrbotten County, the yield per hectare of spring barley was 52 percent lower than 2016 and 45 percent lower than the five-year average. In the county of Västerbotten, the yield per hectare of spring barley decreased by 36 percent compared with previous year and by 32 percent compared with the five-year average. However, in the county of Östergötland, the yield per hectare of spring barley was instead the highest reported ever.

The largest rape and turnip rape harvest in 27 years

The rape and turnip rape harvest in total is preliminary estimated to be 377 200 tonnes, 40 percent more than 2016, 17 percent more than the last five-year average and the largest rape and turnip rape harvest since 1990. The increase is mainly due to the increased crop area of winter rape.

The harvest data for oil flax is uncertain

The total harvest of oil flax has been estimated at around 7 700 tonnes. However, the data is uncertain because some farmers have not yet been able to report their harvest results to Statistics Sweden. Oil flax matures late and sometimes the crop is harvested very late in the season.
