More than half worked three years after leaving upper secondary school

The most common activity among those who finished upper secondary school in the 2008/2009 academic year was work. More than half (53 percent) had work as their main activity. This was an increase of 9 percentage points compared with the previous survey two years ago.

The main activity differs depending on whether you have taken a vocational programme or a study preparation programme. Among those who had taken a vocational programme, seven out of ten had work as their main activity. Meanwhile, among those who had taken a study preparation programme four out of ten who had work as main activity.

The upper secondary school programmes that had the highest proportion of people in work were the Vehicle Programme, the Construction Programme and the Energy Programme. More than eight out of ten students from those programmes had work as their main activity.

Of those who had read a vocational programme, 56 percent worked wholly or partially within their field of study.

Every second person had been unemployed

Half of all upper secondary school leavers had been unemployed sometime since completion of their studies. Among those who were unemployed, 16 percent had been unemployed for one year or more since completion of studies. It was more common for foreign born persons to be unemployed for a long period. 28 percent of foreign born persons had been unemployed for more than a year, while the corresponding figure for those born in Sweden was 15 percent.

Definitions and explanations

Entrance into the Labour Market is a sample survey that has been conducted every other year since 1996. The survey takes place three years after upper secondary school is completed. The aim is to describe entrance into the labour market for those who completed upper secondary school. Information was collected via an Internet survey, while telephone interviews were conducted with those who did not respond to the Internet survey.

The population included those who completed upper secondary school in the 2008/09 academic year (about 96 000 people). The sample size for the 2012 survey was about 8 000 people. The response rate was 52 percent for questions included in the telephone interviews.
