Households’ net purchases in investment funds remain large
Statistical news from Statistics Sweden and Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority 2020-11-23 9.30
Total fund wealth amounted to SEK 4 895 billion at the end of September 2020. This is SEK 341 billion more than in the previous quarter and means that total fund wealth is at a higher level than before the coronavirus crisis. The quarter was marked by relatively large net investments and a positive stock market development.
Developments in the third quarter in brief
- Total net investments amounted to SEK 32 billion.
- Households’ net investments amounted to SEK 8 billion.
- Fund wealth increased the most in the Swedish financial enterprises sector, by SEK 230 billion. Premium pensions accounted for SEK 72 billion of this increase.
- Foreign owners’ holdings increased by SEK 12 billion and amounted to SEK 175 billion.
- The largest increase in the third quarter, SEK 270 billion, was noted in the fund category equity funds, and was the result of strong development in the stock market and net investments amounting to SEK 30 billion.
- Bond and money market funds was the only fund category in which value decreased, by SEK 2 billion. Net sales of SEK 6 billion were a contributing factor to this decline.
- Fund-of-funds accounted for the second largest increase, SEK 29 billion, followed SEK 25 billion in mixed funds.
- Households’ directly-owned fund wealth in Swedish-registered funds amounted to SEK 905 billion in the third quarter of 2020, which is SEK 75 billion more than in the previous quarter and SEK 75 billion more than in the third quarter 2019.
- In the household sector, the largest increase, SEK 54 billion net, came from equity funds, and the smallest increase came from bond and money market funds, which remained unchanged.
- In terms of total fund wealth in the household sector, the equity funds category remains unequivocally the largest category, with SEK 483 billion, followed by SEK 162 billion in fund-of-funds.
The Swedish krona exchange rate was strengthened
The average exchange rate for one euro was SEK 10.36 (10.65) in the third quarter. The Swedish krona was also strengthened against the US dollar, with an average exchange rate of SEK 8.87, compared with SEK 9.68 in the previous quarter. This means that fund investment in foreign currency decreased in value measured in Swedish kronor.
Number of active funds in the statistics
There were 764 active funds in the third quarter, which is unchanged from the second quarter.

These statistics cover Swedish-registered investment funds. Both mutual funds and special funds are included in the statistics. The category ‘Other funds’ includes funds that could not be classified according to any other category, such as hedge funds.
The Swedish financial enterprises sector includes unit-linked funds and premium pension savings, as well as holdings by financial corporations that may have households as final owners.
