Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2023-11-28 8.00

In 2015, 35 000 unaccompanied minors sought asylum in Sweden. The largest group were 16-year-old boys from Afghanistan. In 2022 around 20 000 of them were registered in Sweden. A new report from Statistics Sweden presents the situation in 2022 for the group of unaccompanied minors born in 1999.

A few results from the report are:

  • Almost 7 out of 10 women and more than 8 out of 10 men were employed in November 2022
  • Among the employed, Human health and social work activities is the most common industry to be working in
  • A majority have an upper secondary education, and Engineering, manufacturing and construction and Health and welfare are common fields of education
  • Among women, it is most common to live with a partner and a relatively high share are lone mothers. Among men, it is most common to live with other persons than a partner or a child, or to live alone.

In the report, comparisons are made with other persons who sought asylum in 2015 and lived in Sweden in 2022 and with persons born in Sweden. The comparisons show that men who came to Sweden as unaccompanied minors are employed to a higher degree than persons born in Sweden of the same age. Men born in Sweden are, on the other hand, more often in higher education.
