About MONA

MONA (Microdata Online Access) is Statistics Sweden’s platform for access to microdata. In MONA, users can process data online without the microdata ever leaving Statistics Sweden.

Following a confidentiality assessment pursuant to the Public Access to Information and Secrecy Act, Statistics Sweden may release microdata for research and statistical purposes. Microdata refers to individual units, such as persons or enterprises. Once a request for release has been approved, the person responsible at the recipient is to designate the users who are to be granted access to MONA in order to access the released data.

Each user is given their own user account in MONA with personal login details, and must approve the terms of use, in which they undertake to comply with the rules that apply for MONA.

How to order microdata

MONA users work in a Windows environment via a remote connection. Microdata is displayed on the computer screen and can be processed using the software available in MONA. Users download the results to their own computer, but the microdata is saved in MONA. Without explicit permission from Statistics Sweden, users may not extract microdata from MONA. Users have the possibility of transferring their own material to their storage area in MONA, for instance statistics or scripts needed for the purpose for which Statistics Sweden released the data. Besides having access to released microdata, software and their own storage area, MONA users also have access to metadata regarding most of Statistics Sweden’s microdata registers.
