Aquaculture production rose with 20 percent during 2021

Fish production for consumption was estimated at 11 900 ton in round live weight in 2021. This is about 2 000 tonnes, equivalent to 20 percent, more than in 2020.
Rainbow trout still most popular
Rainbow trout continues to account for the largest share of fish production for consumption, at 10 400 tonnes, which corresponds to almost 90 percent of the total production of fish for consumption. Since last year the production of rainbow trout has increased with almost 1 800 tonnes. Other common fish species include char, with an estimated production of almost 1 300 tonnes, and eel at 90 tonnes.
Rainbow trout also the most popular fish of restocking
The total producution of fish and crayfish for restocking is estimated to almost 900 tonnes, which is an increase with 5 percent since the year before. Here, too, rainbow trout was the most common species; production of rainbow trout for restocking was estimated at about 500 tonnes.
Men - more common in aquaculture than women
The number of people employed in aquaculture is estimated at 531. Among these, 405 are men and 126 are women. The statistics also show that the largest share of people was between 40-64 years old, 242 people was in that age of group.
We also see that most of the people work at farms that use cage farming: 269 people, which is more than half of all people employed in aquaculture.
Operating costs decreased
The operating costs of aquaculture are estimated at SEK 353, which is an decrease of 15 percent compared with 2020. Operating costs include costs of power, repair and maintenance, feed purchases and living microorganisms, as well as other operating costs. The largest cost item is the purchase of feed: SEK 198 million, equivalent to 56 percent of total operating costs.
Previous publications
Official statistics on aquaculture have been produced yearly since 1983. The reference year 2021 is the second year which data on social and economic conditions formed part of the official statistics. The results are presented in the Swedish Board of Aqriculture database and in statistical reports. These statistics on aquaculture are based on data from a questionnarie sent to all aquaculture enterprises in Sweden.
