Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly developing emerging technology with great potential to enhance research and innovation, lead to economic growth and help solve complex societal challenges like the green transition. From the first measurement in 2019 to the most recent in 2024, AI use in businesses has increased from 5.4 to 25.2 percent. Between 2023 and 2024 the use of AI increased in all size classes and all industries, except for manufacturing of transport equipment. Among all industries and aggregates, enterprises in telecommunication had the highest AI intensity measured as the share of enterprises using AI for three of more purposes, by over 50 percent.

This report highlights the rapid diffusion of AI within the business sector and policy targets relating to AI. Occupational groups which play a crucial role in realising the advantages of AI is discussed briefly and a discussion of the concept “AI use” as an indicator by combining enterprise and household statistics in an explorative microdata analysis concludes the report.
