None of Sweden’s elected candidates younger than 30 or older than 64 years

At the end of May, 20 Swedish candidates were elected to the European Parliament. All Swedish political parties in the Riksdag were represented and 11 women and 9 men were elected. None of the elected candidates was younger than 30 or older than 64 years and three quarters of the candidates were between 30 and 49 years.

These latest statistics on the 2019 Swedish elections to the European Parliament present the nominated and elected candidates by political party, sex, age, income, education and country of birth. Corresponding statistics on the voting population are published at the same time. Taken together, these statistics can describe representativeness among the nominated and elected candidates in the European Parliament elections.

Slightly more women than men elected

There were 556 nominated candidates in the 2019 Swedish elections to the European Parliament, held on 26 May 2019. Among these, 42 percent were women and 58 percent were men. The candidates stood for election for Sweden’s 20 seats in the European Parliament. There were 11 women and nine men elected. All eight political parties in the Riksdag received sufficient votes to gain seats in the European Parliament.

No elected candidates younger than 30 or older than 64 years

Among the Swedish Members of the European Parliament 75 percent are aged 30-49 years. This share is considerably larger than the share of persons aged 30-49 years who are entitled to vote, which is just over 30 percent. None of the Swedish Members of the European Parliament is younger than 30 or older than 64 years. Among Members of the Swedish Parliament, the age group 30-49 years is also most overrepresented in a comparison with the voting population at large. This age group accounted for 56 percent of all elected Members of Parliament in 2018.
