Re-nominated candidates in the 2018 election to the Riksdag, County and Municipal Councils
More than half of the candidates renominated
More than half of the candidates nominated in the 2018 general election were also nominated in 2014. A higher percentage of renominated candidates are elderly people, candidates with post-secondary education and Swedish born persons. Young renominated candidates improve their list ranking to a greater extent.
The largest percentage of renominated candidates in 2018 are those in the municipal council election: 57 percent of the candidates were also nominated in the 2014 municipal council election. In the 2018 county council election, 42 percent of the candidates were also nominated in the previous county council election. The corresponding figure in the general election is 39 percent.
The percentage of renominated candidates is, on the whole, relatively consistent over time, in a review of progress in Sweden since the transition to four-year terms.
Comments: The proportion of renominated candidates is calculated based on the number of nominated candidates in each election and how many candidates were also nominated in the previous election in the same political assembly. Reverse calculations based on a previous election year and the number of renominated candidates in the next election leads to similar results, since the number of candidates nominated in each political assembly is relatively consistent over time.
