The single largest item in the category of built-up and developed land in 2020 was land used for transport infrastructure, which accounted for 38 percent of the built-up and developed land. Residential land accounted for roughly 36 percent of the built-up and developed land.

Between 2015 and 2020, built-up and developed land increased by 23 000 hectares. This is a slightly lower increase compared to the period 2010-2015, when built-up and developed land increased by 39 000 hectares.

As part of the release of land use statistics for 2020, Statistics Sweden revised the nomenclature for land use classification. The aim of the revision was to obtain better alignment with international nomenclatures, and for improved compliance with other data sources (e.g. the Swedish Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registration Authority). Updates include the renaming of certain land use categories, and some previous main land use categories (e.g. “land with pits, quarries and mines” and “golf courses and ski pistes”) were included in the main land use category “built-up and developed land”. In addition, methodological improvements were implemented for some sub-categories (e.g. “land with transport infrastructure”). In order to retain comparability over time, previously released figures for the years 2010 and 2015 have been adjusted according to the revised 2020 land use classification and methods.
