Rent increases more within municipal housing

Rents rose an average of 1.7 percent from 2013 to 2014. This is slightly lower than last year, when rents rose by 2.2 percent. The increase was more or less the same in the entire country. A three-room apartment now costs an average of SEK 6 257 per month, but rents vary in different regions of the country.
Rents increased by 1.8 percent in municipal housing companies while private owners raised rents by 1.6 percent. Usually, rents increase by the same amount between the two groups, or are somewhat higher for the private real estate owners.
Real rent doubled since 1969
At current prices, the rent per square metre has become 16 times higher between 1969 and 2013. The general price level has become nearly eight times higher during this time. At constant prices, rents have basically doubled during this period of time. In real terms, the largest increase occurred between 1990 and 1992 as a result of tax and subsidy changes. In 1991 alone rents increased by almost 30 percent.
Less expensive to live in a smaller municipality
The average monthly rent for an apartment with three rooms and a kitchen is SEK 6 257. Larger municipal areas have higher rents than the smaller municipalities. A person living in a municipality with less than 75 000 inhabitants pays around SEK 1 200 less for a three room apartment than someone living in Stockholm.
