Subdued state on the labour market

In October 2023, the number of employed people amounted to 5 237 000, not seasonally adjusted. The average number of hours worked per week was 177.9 million. The number of unemployed people amounted to 416 000 corresponding to an unemployment rate of 7.4 percent. Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data shows a decrease in the share of employed persons. Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data shows an increase in the number of unemployed and in the unemployment rate. The unemployment rate amounted to 8.0 percent.

- In October we see a subdued state on the labour market with few major changes, says Andreas Tano Bask, statistician at the Labour Force Surveys at Statistics Sweden.

Labour force

In October 2023, the number of people in the labour force aged 15–74 was 5 653 000, not seasonally adjusted. The number of women in the labour force was 2 676 000 and the number of men amounted to 2 977 000. The relative labour force participation rate was 74.4 percent. The labour force participation rate for women was 71.7 percent and for men it was 77.0 percent.

Compared with recent months, seasonally adjusted and smoothed data shows an increase in the number of people in the labour force. For seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, the number of people in the labour force amounted to 5 729 000, corresponding to a labour force participation rate of 75.4 percent.

Employment

There were 5 237 000 employed people aged 15–74 in October 2023, not seasonally adjusted. The number of employed women was 2 479 000 and the number of employed men was 2 758 000. The employment rate amounted to 68.9 percent. The employment rate among women was 66.4 percent and for men it was 71.4 percent.

Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data shows a decrease in the share of employed persons compared to recent months. The employment rate was 69.4 percent and the number of employed persons amounted to 5 272 000.

Employees

In October 2023, there were 4 723 000 employees, according to not seasonally adjusted data. The number of employees among women was 2 303 000 and among men 2 420 000. The number of permanent employees increased with 108 000 persons and amounted to 4 073 000. The number of permanent employed women was 1 931 000 and the number of permanent employed men 2 142 000, an increase of 69 000 persons. The number of temporary employees was 650 000. The number of temporary employed women was 372 000 and the number of temporary employed men was 278 000, a decrease of 45 000 persons.

For seasonally adjusted and smoothed data the number of employees amounted to 4 750 000. The number of permanent employees was 4 069 000 and the number of temporary employees was 681 000. Compared with recent months, seasonally adjusted and smoothed data shows a decrease in the number of temporary employees.

Hours worked

The average number of total hours worked in October 2023 amounted to 177.9 million per week, according to not seasonally adjusted data.

The average number of hours worked according to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data was 156.4 million per week. Compared with recent months, seasonally adjusted and smoothed data shows an increase in the number of hours worked.

Unemployment

In October 2023, the number of unemployed people aged 15–74 years amounted to 416 000, not seasonally adjusted. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 7.4 percent. The number of unemployed women was 197 000 and the number of unemployed men amounted to 219 000. The unemployment rate for both women and men was 7.4 percent. The number of long-term unemployed, unemployed for at least 27 weeks, amounted to 135 000. Of the number of long-term unemployed, 68 000 were women and 67 000 were men. The number of unemployed young people aged 15–24 amounted to 121 000. The youth unemployment rate was 19.8 percent. Among unemployed young people, 74 000 were full-time students.

Compared with recent months, the number of unemployed among people aged 15-74 increased and amounted to 457 000, according to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data. The unemployment rate also increased and amounted to 8.0 percent. Among young people aged 15–24 the number of unemployed amounted to 151 000. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 22.1 percent. Compared with recent months, seasonally adjusted and smoothed data shows an increase in the number of unemployed and the unemployment rate among young people.

Unused labour supply

Unemployed people, underemployed people and latent job seekers together constitute the unused labour supply. In October 2023, the unused labour supply averaged 21.6 million hours per week. The unused labour supply corresponds to 540 000 full-time employments with 40-hour work weeks.
