More girls than boys feel stressed in school

Seven out of ten girls in upper secondary school feel stressed due to high demands on themselves, compared to four out of ten boys. Six out of ten girls in upper secondary school are also stressed because of homework and tests, compared to two out of ten boys.

The older the pupils are, the more they feel stressed in school. Regarding the question about whether children feel stressed due to high demands on themselves, 20 percent of those in years 4–6 answered yes, 52 percent in years 7–9 and 55 percent in upper secondary school. More girls than boys in years 7–9 and upper secondary school feel this stress. In years 7–9, 67 percent of the girls feel stress, compared to 38 percent of the boys. The corresponding figures for upper secondary school are 70 percent of the girls and 41 percent of the boys.

In years 4–6, 9 percent often feel stressed due to homework or tests; this stress increases to 35 percent in years 7–9 and 40 percent in upper secondary school. Even for this type of stress, the percentage is higher for girls than for boys, both in years 7–9 and upper secondary school. In years 7–9, 48 percent of the girls feel this type of stress compared to 22 percent of the boys, while for pupils in upper secondary school, 62 percent of the girls and 19 percent of the boys feel this stress.

In some cases, stress can lead to other problems such as psychosomatic disorders (fatigue, headaches, stomach aches etc.)

About half of the girls in upper secondary school have headaches at least once a week (47 percent) while the corresponding share is one fourth (25 percent) for boys. The corresponding information for years 4–6 is every fifth child (19 percent). When looking at all the children, 22 percent of the girls have stomach aches at least once a week compared to 15 percent among the boys.

New statistics on children

All information from the Living Conditions Survey of Children 2013/2014 is now available. Among other things, the information concerns children's health, situation in school, spare time, media habits and household chores they help out with.

Definitions and explanations

Stressed due to high demands on themselves: Those who answered "yes" to the question:
- Concerning school, do you feel stressed because you have high demands on yourself?

Stressed due to homework and tests: Those who answered "often" to the question:
- How often do you feel stressed because of homework or tests?

Headaches and stomach aches: Those who answered "every day", "a few times a week" or "once a week" to the following questions:
- How often have you had a headache during the last six months?
- How often have you had a stomach ache during the last six months?
