R&D in Sweden, private non-profit sector 2017
Private non-profit sector – more financer than executer of R&D
Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2018-12-14 9.30
The private non-profit sector consists mainly of organisations, such as non-profit organisations and foundations, or other non-governmental organisations. The sector include both executers and financers of research and development (R&D). However, this sector mostly funds R&D performed by others, extramural R&D. In 2017, total expenditure on extramural R&D was SEK 5.3 billion.
Since the results are based on a sample survey, they are subject to some uncertainty, which should be taken into account when interpreting the results.

With regard to intramural R&D, the trend points in the opposite direction. In 2017, total expenditure on intramural R&D was SEK 185 million, which is a decrease of 30 percent. Note that this change is not statistically significant.

In terms of time spent on R&D by employees, measured in full-time equivalents (FTE), they amounted to 109 in total in 2017. This is a decrease by 66 percent from 2013; the change from 2015 is not statistically significant. In previous years, the share performed by women and by men was equal. However, in 2017, men performed only 27 percent of the FTEs.
