Geographical divisions and digital boundaries
County and municipality
There are 21 counties and 290 municipalities in Sweden. County and municipal boundaries are available at Lantmäteriet.
Statistics Sweden offers simpler digital boundaries for counties and municipalities. See Digitala gränser.
Locality and smaller locality
There are 2,017 localities in Sweden according to the latest division from 2020. A locality consists of at least 200 inhabitants and the distance between the houses should be no more than 200 meters. See Open data for localities.
There are 3,085 smaller localities in Sweden according to the latest division from 2020. Smaller localities are concentrated settlements with 50–199 registered inhabitants. See Open data for small localities.
DeSO
DeSO divides Sweden into 5,984 areas with between 700 and 2,700 inhabitants. The division takes into account geographical conditions so that the boundaries, as far as possible, follow, for example, streets, watercourses and railways. See Öppna geodata för Demografiska statistikområden (DeSO).
RegSO
RegSO divides Sweden into 3,363 areas with between 663 and 22,622 inhabitants. The division takes into account geographical conditions so that the boundaries, as far as possible, follow, for example, streets, watercourses and railways. See Öppna geodata för Regionala statistikområden (RegSo).
Election district
The division into election districts is revised by the Election Authority in connection with general elections. There are approximately 6,000 electoral districts in Sweden according to the 2021 division. Election districts are referred to by a code that contains the municipal code and a serial number within the municipality and by a name.
Digital boundaries are being revised in connection with general elections and are available at the Valmyndigheten.
District
The district division is a division for which Lantmäteriet is responsible. It is based on an adjusted version of the parish division in force on 31 December 1999. There are about 2,500 districts in Sweden.
The district division does not change over time. District boundaries do not have to follow either property or municipal boundaries.
Information about the district division is available from Lantmäteriet.
Postal code
Postal codes are based on PostNord's postal codes for addresses. The number of posal codes at the five-digit level is approximately 10,700 and is updated once a year in March. For digital boundaries contact Postnummerservice Norden AB.
Grid square
Statistics Sweden's Market Profiles produce statistics based on registers where the smallest geographical unit is the address. All addresses have a coordinate, which means that Statistics Sweden can produce statistics for squares of different sizes. The coordinates come from Lantmäteriet.
Examples of grid sizes are 250x250 meters in urban areas and kilometer grids outside urban areas. The statistics are reported according to the reference system SWEREF99TM.
Preferred areas
There is also a possibility to produce statistics for preferred areas
